Did you grow up eating dirt pudding cups? I did. This chocolate dessert was always a hit at birthday parties or around halloween. Dirt pudding cups or as some call “dirt and worms” are a chocolate pudding dessert topped with chocolate cookies and gummy worms. Traditionally this dessert calls for regular chocolate pudding and chocolate sandwich cookies. This version gets an ingredient update for a more wholesome treat that still tastes deliciously chocolatey with a bit of crunch.

These healthier dirt cups use chocolate chia seed pudding as the base. It’s naturally sweetened with maple syrup and adds healthy fats and fiber to the chocolate treat. The pudding gets topped with crushed double chocolate cookies. I used double chocolate almond flour cookies to keep these gluten-free and grain-free.  Lastly, some naturally dyed gummy worms that add a fun and festive touch to the dessert.

All you need is 6 simple ingredients to make these healthier dirt cups. Here’s what you’ll need:

Chocolate chia seed pudding – these dirt cups use the chocolate version of my vanilla chia seed pudding. All you needs is chia seeds, plant-based milk, cocoa powder, and maple syrup. It’s incredible easy to make but needs some time for the chia seeds to absorb the liquid. I recommend making at least 4 hours in advance or the night before you’re serving.

Chocolate cookies – grab some store bought crunchy double chocolate cookies to top the chia seed pudding and create the “dirt”. I used Simple Mills double chocolate crunchy cookies and they worked great. Lesser Evil has chocolate cookies that are a good option also!

Gummy worms – naturally dyed gummy worms like Yum Earth and Smart Sweet are great options for this fun topping. You can always skip this addition if you’d like or opt for a chocolatey addition like chopped up peanut butter cups, crushed chocolate covered almonds, or chocolate chips!

How to Make Healthier Dirt Cups?

Make the chia seed pudding. In a blender combine the raw cashews and filtered water, cocoa powder, and maple syrup. Blend on high until smooth, about 2 minutes. Pour the cashew milk in an airtight container. Whisk in the chia seeds. Cover and place in the fridge for 4 hours or overnight.

Crush the cookies. Simply place them in a plastic bag and crush using the bottom of a glass.

Assemble the dirt cups. Top the chia pudding with crushed cookies and gummy worms or toppings of choice. Serve immediately.

1/2 cup raw cashews

2 cups filtered water (I use Essentia Ionized Alkaline Water)

1/2 cup chia seeds

1/4 cup maple syrup

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

1 cup crunchy double chocolate cookies

1216 gummy worms

Instructions

In a blender combine the raw cashews and filtered water, cocoa powder, and maple syrup. Blend on high until smooth, about 2 minutes. Pour the cashew milk in an airtight container. Whisk in the chia seeds. Cover and place in the fridge for 4 hours or overnight.

Once the chia pudding is chilled, divide it into bowls.

Crush the cookies by simply placing them in a plastic bag and crush using the bottom of a glass. Top the chia pudding with crushed cookies and gummy worms. Serve immediately.

Notes

Cashew milk substitution: I highly recommend making your own cashew milk for this recipe for the creamiest texture. You can skip this step and simply blend 2 cups of plant-based milk with the maple syrup and cocoa powder in the blender.
